 Stephen E. Bruneau was born in 1964 and has lived in Newfoundland since 1968. A graduate of Memorial University's Civil Engineering program, he started working at C-CORE in the summer of 1992 and immediately became immersed in the ongoing iceberg design load work for the Terra Nova FPSO. This work prompted his Ph.D. studies in ice loads, but not long after ice issues at the Confederation Bridge took centre stage and that ended up being the final theme of his doctoral thesis. Later, research experiments for and employment with private companies had him and his colleagues running around after icebergs, bashing them into cliffs and finding ways to cut, melt, split measure, model, track and predict them. In addition to studying the scientific characteristics of icebergs he has long been interested in their awesome beauty and their commercial potential for tourism and for consumer products. Through this interest he has developed many excellent friends and contacts in the tourism and ice-harvesting industries and has enjoyed communicating iceberg reference material and knowledge to those requesting it (all over the world). Stephen Bruneau presently lives in St. John's with his wife, Mary, and their two children, David and Laura. He is active in charity work, basketball and squash, and he enjoys keeping an eye and a lens pointed out to sea.
