May 8, 2008 Dale Jarvis a Second Life Panellist
On May 17, 2008, at 10:00 AM PDT, Dale Jarvis will speak on a panel at the Second Life Campus of the Center for Digital Storytelling (@ “Teaching 2’ - NMC Campus, SLURL - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Teaching%202/209/109/23). The Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) is proposing a reflection on storytelling in virtual environments in the form of a panel in Second Life. Storyteller and folklorist Dale Jarvis will present some thoughts on virtual storytelling and the impact, and potential, of the digital age on intangible cultural heritage in his presentation entitled "Not in my time, and not in your time: Oral Tradition and the Virtual World."

Congratulations to Dale Jarvis, who has been named Newfoundland and Labrador's first provincial folklorist. Author of Haunted Shores, Wonderful Strange, and The Golden Leg, Dale holds an MA in Folklore from Memorial University and has worked for thirteen years with the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL). His new position is the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Development Officer for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

When two brothers from Englee were suddenly stricken with typhoid fever, a call was put out to the Grenfell Mission in St. Anthony. Carl Hammerstrom, a young American doctor, answered the call and travelled to Englee to take the two men back to St. Anthony for treatment. The young doctor would face his greatest challenge yet when the ship he and his two patients were travelling on became storm-bound on the Grey Islands en route to St. Anthony.

Nellie P. Strowbridge will be read from her new book, The Newfoundland Tongue, as part of the WANL Monthly Readings Series on Monday, May 5th, beginning at 8 pm at the Hideaway Pub, Deer Lake. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
