Congratulations!

Congratulations to M. T. Dohaney! She has been awarded the 2012 Lieutenant-Governor's Award for High Achievement in English Language Literary Arts! Critically acclaimed novelist M. T. Dohaney was born in Newfoundland and currently lives in Fredericton, NB. After a career of teaching at the University of New Brunswick, she now devotes her time to writing. In addition to her five novels, which include The Flannigans, she has published a work of non-fiction as well as numerous short stories and articles.

Congratulations to Dawn Baker! Her book, A Newfoundland Christmas, has been shortlisted for the 2012 Heritage and History Book Awards! The Heritage and History Book Awards are presented by the Writers Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador for works that exemplify excellence in the interpretation of the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Heritage and History Book Awards are sponsored by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Award Winner!
Flanker Press publication Republic of Doyle: The Definitive Guide to Doyle: Seasons One & Two designed by Mike Mouland has placed Third in the Reference Category of the annual Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. The Alcuin Society is a Vancouver-based non-profit society for the support and appreciation of fine books. In addition to the annual Book Design Competition, the Society publishes a quarterly journal, Amphora, and organizes lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and field visits on various aspects of the book. Congratulations to Mike and everyone involved!

Rights Sales
Bayard Canada has purchased the world French-language rights to Millions of Souls: The Philip Riteman Story by Philip Riteman with Mireille Baulu-MacWillie and translated by Mireille. Bayard will release their book in Montreal this fall. Congratulations to Philip and Mireille!

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Dale Cameron and Todd Warren! Their book, George House Heritage Bed & Breakfast Kitchen Recipes, was announced as the winner for the Canada - English category of the Gourmand World Cookbooks Awards 2010! The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards were founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau. Every year, they honour the best food and wine books. The winner in each country will compete against winners in the same category in other countries for the Best in the World. The results will be announced on March 3, 2011, at the annual awards event. It will take place in Paris at Le 104, the new artistic centre of the city of Paris, on the first day of the Paris Cookbook Fair at the same location.

Scott Keating is a finalist for the Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award for Excellence in Illustration for his illustrations in What Colour is the Ocean? by Gary Collins with Maggie Rose Parsons. Raoul Andersen and John Crellin are finalists for the Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing for Mi'sel Joe: An Aboriginal Chief's Journey. The winners will be announced at the 2010 Atlantic Book Awards celebration, a highlight of the week-long Atlantic Book Awards and Festival, taking place at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, April 14, at the Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth, NS.

Congratulations to Hilda Chaulk Murray! Her book, Of Boats on the Collar, was awarded Honorary Mention by the Keith Matthews Awards Committee of the Canadian Nautical Research Society for Best Book published in 2007 on a Canadian nautical subject or by a Canadian on any nautical subject. Professor Keith Matthews, the first president of what became the Canadian Nautical Research Society, died in 1984. At the society's annual meeting held later that year it was decided to offer an award in his name for the best publication on maritime history. The first award for a book was made in 1985. The book award is offered annually to the best book published in the previous calendar year by a Canadian about any maritime subject, or by any other about a Canadian maritime subject. In determining a winner, the Chair of the Awards Committee is assisted by the Book Review Editor of The Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord and one other member of the society who is in the larger maritime academic community.

Congratulations to Paul Butler. His novel NaGeira made Donna Morrissey's Canada Reads shortlist. Canada Reads is a CBC Radio program about books that's designed to appeal to both avid and occasional readers. Five celebrity panellists each champion a work of Canadian fiction they'd love us all to read and, in a game of literary survivor, whittle down that list of books to one, the book Canada Reads.
